RICHARDSON, Texas/WACO, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville football continues to climb the AFCA Coaches Poll moving up three places to the No. 18 spot from last week following the Javelinas' (3-0, 1-0 LSC), 30-9 victory over Western New Mexico last Saturday.
12 of the Javelinas' 30 points in the win came from junior kicker Gilbert Garza who was three-for-three on the day in field goals all from 45-yards and beyond earning him Lone Star Conference Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
On the day, the Weslaco native drilled field goals from 45, 50, and 53-yards, the longest in the conference this season.
The honor marks the fourth time Garza has been selected for the award after earning it three times last season, he is also the second Javelina to receive player of the week recognition after Amos Coleman III received it the first two weeks of the season.
The No. 18 ranking marks the highest ranking of the season so far for TAMUK, while also making the team the highest ranked team from the Lone Star Conference with the only other one being No. 22 Angelo State (1-2, 0-1 LSC).
TAMUK also makes its first appearance in the D2Football.com poll this week at the No. 22 spot.
