Javelinas finish two for two in doubles play on final day of Islander Open

The team is back in action this weekend hosting the Javelina Jam

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis team wrapped up their first tournament of the Fall 2023 on Sunday afternoon at the Islander Open, hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

The final day was highlighted by a strong doubles showing by the Javelinas. The team had struggled in the first two days of competition in the category, but finished strong to win both of the two doubles matches the squad faced.

Starting off the day for the Javelinas, the team of Milou ter Morsche and Alessa Maier delivered a win over Marika Mueller and Nouray Metwally of Lamar, 6-4. Shortly after, Raina Zaffar and Luna Jokanovic secured a convincing 6-2 win over another Lamar duo, helping the Javelinas to finish two for two on the day in doubles.

Maier would snag a second win on the day against Zeynep Ozturk of Utah State in straight sets to win the Flight A consolation bracket, netting her fifth place in the grouping.

Zaffar would be awarded victory as well in her singles matchup after her opponent from UTRGV was forced to retire due to injury.

Elsewhere in singles competition, the rest of the Javelinas squad would give their Division I competition all they could handle. Three Javelinas came up just short of victory, falling in tiebreakers. Manuela Turolo (2-6, 7-5, 8-10), Luna Jokanovic (6-2, 4-6, 2-10), and Annika Andersson Gomez (6-4, 2-6, 3-10) would all push their matches to the brink before falling to their opponents from Utah State, Texas State, and Lamar respectively.

Milou ter Morsche would also drop her match against Yaiza Vazquez of UTRGV in the finals of Flight D, 1-6, 3-6. Though Ter Morsche would still finish the tournament in an impressive second place in the grouping.

The Javelinas will be back in action this weekend as they host the Javelina Jam, starting Friday, Sep. 15 through Saturday, Sep. 16 in Kingsville, Texas.
