24 total Javelinas cracked All-LSC teams, while three were recognized as All-Academic

RICHARDSON, Texas— The Lone Star Conference announced its 2023 Outdoor Track and Field award winners on Wednesday, with 24 total Texas A&M-Kingsville student-athletes receiving recognition on All-LSC teams, while three were named to the All-Academic squads. 10 were chosen for the league's first team, while six cracked the second team and eight the third team.

Among the first-team selections include junior Katryna Hernandez, who scored 24 points across three events at the championship meet, winning the shot put at 13.85m (45-5.25), as well as placing second in the hammer throw and third in the discus.

Three more throwers join Hernandez on the first team, with graduate student Diana Bustos being named champion of the hammer throw thanks to a 49.75m (163-3) measurement and collecting a point in the discus.

Junior Veronica Garcia, meanwhile, won the discus with a 46.90m (153-10) mark and placed sixth in the hammer.

Graduate student D.J. Delancy rounds out the first-team throwers as he was crowned champion of the shot put, with an 18.26m (59-11) toss allowing him to climb the podium. Delancy was an all-academic selection for the third time in his outdoor career.

On the track, sophomore Ja'Qualon Scott dominated two events, putting up 20 total points after winning the 110m hurdles with a time of 13.81 and claiming the 400m hurdle championship in 52.41.

The women's 4x400m relay crew also cracked the first team as sophomore Cynai Christopher, freshman Melanie Roland, sophomore Vitiana Robert, and newcomer Amber Gonzalez clocked in at 3:45.06 to take the title, and Robert was also selected for the all-academic team.

Wrapping up the first-team, sophomore Thomas Nieto handily won the pole vault, placing him first with a 5.31m (17-5) clearance.

Junior Paxton Hair headlines the second team after picking up 12 points, most of which came courtesy of a 54.24m (171-11) performance in the discus that landed him third. Hair also placed seventh in the hammer throw and fifth in the shot put, an event that featured senior Marco Arevalo securing silver with a 17.54m (57-3), helping him snag second-team honors as well.

Also placing second, junior Markim Felix launched the javelin 68.55m (24-11) to make the second team, while fellow thrower Garrett Burns logged 10 points across the shot put and discus to join him.

A pair of jumpers round out the second team as freshman Fakhreddine Benhadja picked up 12 points with a third-place finish in the high jump at 2.08m (6-9.75) and a bronze in the triple jump following a 14.02m (46-0) mark. On her first attempt, newcomer Madison Ramos collected silver in the women's high jump thanks to a 1.63m (5-4.25) clearance.

The men's 4x400m relay was issued third-team honors as junior Sterling Riles, classmate Bryson Dyer, freshman Tony Benitez and junior Michael Samihamba took bronze in the event at 3:11.50.
