Javelinas drop final matchup of their road trip to LCU 42-28

TAMUK falls to Lady Chaps in low scoring affair

LUBBOCK, Texas- The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team faced off against the Lubbock Christian Lady Chaps Tuesday in Lubbock, Texas at the Rip Griffin Center where they fell short 42-28.

"I am extremely proud of our effort on the defensive end of the floor." said coach Michael Madrid. "This was the first time in a while we defended the way we have normally defended. Never got into an offensive rhythm but that is a credit to LCU and their defense. We are looking forward to our next opportunity".

Junior Veyda Lake was the scoring leader on the day with 16 points, going 8-12 from the field, with five rebounds as well to her credit. Lake the only Javelina to score in double digits on the afternoon as the rest of the team combined for a total of 12 points.

Neither team able to find their groove offensively as TAMUK shot 32.5% from the field and 20.0% from three, while the Lady Chaps shot 29.6% from the field and 30.8% from deep. LCU would out rebound the Javelinas by just 4 boards having 35, while TAMUK had 31 of their own.

The Game would begin with the Lady Chaps immediately scoring two quick buckets putting it at 4-0 early with 9:10 to go. Another game minute would pass before yet another LCU bucket would drop putting it at 6-0 with 8:02 left in the first. It would take roughly three whole game minutes, and quite a few misses from both squads before the next score at the 4:47 mark which would be a layup by the Lady Chaps, extending their lead to 8. 4:10 on the clock in the first quarter would be the last time anyone scored sending things to the second at 10-0 LCU on top.

The second saw the Javelinas get going as Veyda Lake put the first points of the day on the board starting off a 7-0 run for TAMUK, having Janessa Payne cap it off with a three. Both squads would battle back and forth before a Lake layup would out the Javelinas within three, 11-14 with 4:36 left to go in the half. LCU would go on a 8-0 run before a Shelby Ray jumper stopped the Lady Chap run with 1:27 left before the half. No bucket would fall before the half and both squads would go into halftime with the game at 13-22 LCU leading.

The third would see the Javelinas come out of the locker room and rattle off two straight buckets cutting the lead to four with 7:58 left in the quarter leaving things at 18-22. LCU would add a couple scores before both teams would go on a drought for two plus game minutes before the Lady Chaps would continue their run making it an 8-0 run with 4:20 left in the third. At the 3:46 point in the third is when Lake would go on a run of her own rattling off the rest of the Javelinas points in the game sending things to the fourth 24-30 off of a TAMUK 6-0 run.

The fourth would start with the Lady Chaps scoring first increasing the lead to nine before Lake once again stopped the LCU run with a jumper putting things at 26-33 with 7:06 left in the game. Almost a full three game minutes would pass before either team would score, but a layup from the Lady Chaps at the 4:38 marker would send LCU on a run. The 7-0 run would be halted by a Lake jumper with 1:50 to go in the game before the Lady Chaps would tack on three more ending the game 28-42.
