Javelinas visit UT Permian Basin for LSC matchup

Game one set for first pitch time of 2 p.m. on Friday, April 12

KINGSVILLE, Texas - The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball program heads back out on the road this week for a four-game set against UT Permian Basin starting on April 12 to continue the Lone Star Conference portion of the 2019 schedule.

The Javelinas are fresh off a series win over Tarleton in conference play after taking three of four against the Texans. TAMUK swept the first doubleheader of the weekend as senior Preston Plovanich (Santa Fe, Texas) threw his fourth career complete-game shutout at 6-0 on the front end, while sophomore Giancarlo Servin (Edinburg, Texas) walked off the back end on a single and error.

The second doubleheader ended in a split with the Hogs taking the first at 11-5 before the Texans grabbed the second at 4-0.

Following the series, Servin and redshirt senior Manny Loredo (McAllen, Texas) both put their averages over .360 as Servin is hitting .362 with 50 hits in 138 at bats, adding eight doubles, one triple and one home run to his count, while Loredo is batting .360 with 45 hits in 125 at bats while leading the team with four home runs.

Junior Seth Spinn (Holland, Texas) remains the lone Javelina over the .400 mark as he owns a .407 clip on 50 hits in 123 at bats while leading the team with a .510 on-base percentage and .528 slugging percentage.

Following the 6-0 win in game one, Plovanich lowered his ERA to 3.71 with a 4-2 mark and a team-high 56 punchouts in 51 innings pitched, while junior Zach Boyett (Robinson, Texas) lowered his ERA to 3.27 following the 3-2 win in game two.

The senior duo of Garrett Alexander (Spring, Texas) and Eric Sandoz (Austin, Texas), along with freshman Matthew Sesler (Harlingen, Texas), lead the bullpen with ERAs under 4.00 as Sesler leads the pack with a 1.86 ERA through nine relief appearances.

Sandoz is close behind with 2.01 ERA, while Alexander brings up the rear at 3.63.

The Falcons sit at 12-20 overall, 3-5 in LSC play following a series win over Eastern New Mexico back in the end of March. UTPB is currently on a three-game skid, however, following losses to Abilene Christian and Southwest (N.M.).

Among qualified hitters, Skyler Palermo leads the group with a .287 average on 31 hits in 108 at bats, added six doubles, one triple and three home runs on the year, while Pemron Burrows stands as the other hitter close behind at .283 with 28 hits in 99 at bats.

Jake Rohde and Krisjon Segleski stand as the only pitchers with an ERA under 4.00 with at least five appearances. Rohde owns a 3.48 ERA through 20 and 2/3 innings pitched, making nine relief appearances for a 2-1 mark, while Segleski is 0-1 with one save behind a 3.81 ERA through 28 and 1/3 innings pitched.

Alex Rivera and Ivan Thomas have received the most starts on the hill for UTPB at nine and seven, respectively, with Rivera going 1-3 with a 7.05 ERA through 37 innings pitched followed by Thomas' 7.56 ERA through 25 innings on the mound for a 2-3 record.

Game one is set for April 12 with first pitch at 2 p.m., while the Saturday, April 13, doubleheader starts at 1 p.m. in Odessa, Texas. Game four will close the series with a 1 p.m. start time on Sunday, April 14.
