Javelinas suffer setback to Islanders

Ruiz lone holdout in 6-1 loss to TAMUCC

Box Score KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis program took on Division-I foe Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sunday at the Javelina Tennis Courts, and had one holdout stave off the shutout en route ending up on the backend of a 6-1 decision.

The Javelinas (3-2) dropped the doubles point to the Islanders (5-2) before junior Valerie Ruiz (San Antonio, Texas) ran her unbeaten streak in the dual season to 18 straight in singles play with a thrilling three-set win in the fifth singles flight to secure the lone team point for the hosts.

Ruiz dropped the first set to Myu Kageyama at 7-6 before claiming the second set at 6-3. The San Antonio native battled back from a 6-2 deficit in the super tiebreaker set and eventually knotted the score at 8-8 before coming away with the win.

The streak for Ruiz in the dual season dates back to March 13, 2018, when she bested Linying Xiao from MSU Denver in three sets. The win over Kageyama on Sunday marks the second Division-I opponent she has bested in the run as she also downed Eli Arnaudova from New Mexico State in straight sets back on March 21, 2018.

Outside of the matchup at the fifth flight in the singles rotation, redshirt senior Lisa Carvajal (McAllen, Texas), sophomore Laura Montalvo (Cochabamba, Bolivia) and junior Julia Rauer (Leiselheim, Germany) each had their respective singles matches go to three sets.

Carvajal took the first set over Carolina Bulatovic in the top flight at 6-4 before the Islander came back and took the final two sets at 6-3, 6-0.

Montalvo squared off with Mariya Shumeika in the fourth flight that saw the latter claim the first set at 6-3. Montalvo battled back in the second set at 6-1 before Shumeika claimed the decisive set at 6-1.

Rauer found herself in a similar situation as she claimed set one over Vanessa Reinicke at 6-3 and nearly had the team point in the second set before the Islander stole it back at 7-6. The super tiebreaker needed 10 points from Reinicke who secured the point at 10-5 for the visitors.
