Javelinas Host Islanders for First Home Match of 2019

Dual match slated for 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 24

KINGSVILLE, Texas – Hoping to rebound from a midweek loss that ended an unbeaten start to the spring schedule, the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis program will host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sunday, February 24, for the first home match of 2019.

The Javelinas are fresh off a hard-fought 4-3 loss to Dallas Baptist in a midweek matchup that came down to the wire. TAMUK dropped the doubles point before rattling off three straight singles win to turn the tide, while the Patriots closed the match with three singles wins of their own to take the decision.

Junior Valerie Ruiz (San Antonio, Texas) extended her unbeaten streak to 17 straight with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Kate Daugherty in the fourth singles flight after teaming up with freshman Loren Tristan (Corpus Christi, Texas) in the third doubles tandem for a 6-2 win over Anastasija Djordjevic and Ira Vogelmann.

Ruiz, alongside classmate Julia Rauer (Leiselheim, Germany), lead the Blue and Gold with identical 4-0 records on the year to date. Ruiz has done all of her work in the fourth spot of the singles rotation while Rauer has anchored the fifth.

Ruiz and her partner Tristan are the only remaining unbeaten duo on the team in all four matches, owning a 4-0 mark on the year, while senior Phonephathep Philavong (Vientiane, Laos) and junior Victoria Romanovskaia (Simferopol, Crimea, Russia) have teamed up for a 3-1 mark.

TAMUCC is sitting at 4-2 on the year so far after suffering consecutive losses to SMU and Rice last week. Carolina Bulatovic anchors the top of the singles rotation with a 4-0 mark between the first and second position, while Myu Kageyama and Mariya Shumeika both own identical 4-2 records through six matches.

Only one doubles tandem has seen action in more than one contest, with Bulatovic and Shumeika owning a 1-2 record on the year so far.

First serve for the dual match is set for 2 p.m. CT at the Javelina Tennis Courts on Sunday, February 24.
