Javelinas Return Home To Host Mustangs

(09/21/12)

KINGSVILLE, Texas -- For the first time since opening week, the Texas A&M-Kingsville football team returns to the familiar surroundings of Javelina Stadium as it hosts Midwestern State in a pivotal Lone Star Conference contest at 7 p.m. Saturday.

The game will be streamed live on Foxsportssouthwest.com as the Lone Star Conference Game of the Week.

The Javelinas will be out to avenge their first loss of the season when they face the Mustangs. Kingsville dropped out of the AFCA Top 25 after its 40-10 loss at Cowboys Stadium to West Texas. Kingsville is now 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

The Mustangs, who opened the season No. 4 and were selected to win the Lone Star Conference in the preseason, enter the contest 1-1 overall and in the LSC after routing Texas A&M-Commerce 65-14. After an opening week bye, Midwestern dropped in the rankings after a 20-17 loss to Tarleton State.

The Kingsville and the Mustangs are half a game out of first.

The Javelinas will be looking to even the overall series with Midwestern at 7-7. The Mustangs are the lone team currently in the LSC to lead the all-time series with Kingsville. Midwestern took the series lead with a 44-38 win in Wichita Falls a season ago.

The two enter the game with two of the top defensive teams in the Lone Star. The Mustangs are first in total defense allowing just 312.5 yards a game. TAMUK is second in yards allowed with 314.3. Midwestern is second in points allowed with 17, while the Javelinas are third at 20 points a game.

A key battle will be if the Javs can stop the rushing offense of Midwestern. Offensively, the Mustangs boast the league’s top running offense. They average 261 yards a game. Kingsville is second in the league in rushing yards allowed with 99. The Mustangs have three players averaging over 40 rushing yards a game.

The Javelinas biggest weapon on offense thus far has been kicker Matt Stoll. In three games, Stoll has seven field goals to lead the team in scoring with 25 points.

Live stats will be available on the Game Day page on javelinaathletics.com.
