
KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – After a doubleheader on Friday that saw Eastern New Mexico and Texas A&M-Kingsville combine for 24 hits and eight runs, the bats awoke on Saturday to the tune of 23 hits and 18 runs. The Javelinas won their third straight from the Zias, 13-5 in Lone Star Conference South Division softball action. (

The Javelinas (9-11, 3-0) pounded out 13 hits in the victory and have now won five straight games. Sophomore third baseman Yvette Berlanga (San Antonio/O’Connor HS) led the hitting attack with three hits, a double, a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base.
The first two batters in the Hoggie lineup, senior Cassie Anderson (Splendora/Splendora HS) and Kaycee Bryan (Splendora/Splendora HS), each went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Bryan also added a double.
Lindsey Brown (Spring/Spring HS) and Amanda Arriaga (Kingsville/H.M. King HS) each drove in three runs for the Javelinas. Brown was 2-for-2 with a double and two runs scored. Arriaga was only 1-for-4, but drove in two runs with a double and a third with an infield ground ball.
Senior Ariel Lichtenberger (Alice/Alice HS) entered the weekend with just four hits on the season, but appears to have snapped out of her slump with five hits in the series. She had a double, drove in a run and scored three times in Saturday’s game for the Hoggies. Another senior Dalia Marroquin (Brownsville/Porter HS) finished off the game with a two-run double to make a run-rule victory.
Brown also picked up her third win of the series in the pitching circle. She allowed 10 hits, three earned runs and a walk while striking out one to improve to 8-6.
The Zias (6-17, 0-3) had three players with two hits apiece. Michelle Anderson went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI. Samantha Davis had two hits, a double and an RBI while Melissa Williams had the only triple of the game.
Kimberly Crouse was handed the loss for the Zias. She went 2.1 innings allowing four hits and three runs while striking out one batter.
The Javelinas are back in action on Monday at home against Newman at 2 o’clock.
