STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville men’s track and field team competed at the Tarleton State Invitational on Thursday night. A pair of freshmen, Isaiah Glover (Cuero/Cuero HS) and Sergio Rios (Brownsville/James Pace HS), each provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships.
The Javelinas did not win a single event, but Glover came the closest as he took home silver medal honors in the triple jump. He leaped 47-11.5 in the event and provisionally qualified for nationals in the process. He also nabbed a fourth place finish in the long jump with a leap of 22-0.25 and ran the anchor leg on the 4x400-meter relay team that finished sixth in a time of 3:26.32.
Rios ran on the same relay team as Glover, but it was in the 400-meter hurdles where he shined. He crossed the finish line in a time of 53.67 which provisionally qualifies him for nationals.
Senior Jorge Guerra (Roma/Roma HS) showed a marked improvement in both the shot put and discus over the Border Olympics, five days ago. He finished third in the shot put with a toss of 51-9.25, a personal best. He heaved the discus 153-4.25 to take seventh place.
Junior Connell Davis (Portland/Gregory-Portland HS) grabbed a third place finish in the long jump as he edged Glover by a quarter inch at 22-0.5.
The Javelinas are back in action on March 20 at the IBC Bank Cactus Cup at Javelina Stadium.
