KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team opened their 2010 campaign by splitting a pair of games with visiting Texas A&M-International on Monday at Hubert Field. The Javelinas won the first game, 4-3 and dropped the second game, 12-4.
In the first game, Javelina senior left fielder Cassie Anderson (Splendora/Splendora HS), an All-American last year, opened the bottom half of the first inning with a towering home run to straight away center field to put the team on the board.
The Dustdevils would tie the score in the top of the third inning, but the Hoggies would respond in the bottom half of the inning. After one out, Kaycee Bryan (Splendora/Splendora HS) and Lindsey Brown (Spring/Blinn JC) each walked. Then, Ariel Lichtenberger (Alice/Alice HS) drove in Bryan with a single and Kaitlin McCool (Woodsboro/Woodsboro HS) brought home Brown with a ground out.
The Javelinas tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth when Melissa St. Clair (Garden City, KS/Garden City HS) tripled to left and scored on an Yvette Berlanga (San Antonio/O’Connor HS) sacrifice fly.
The Dustdevils threatened in the fifth when they had two runners on base and one out. Brown got the first batter to line out and then gave up a deep drive to left field that Anderson ran down. Anderson’s outstanding grab saved two runs for the Hogs.
The Dustdevils narrowed the margin in the seventh when Victoria Beltran hit a two-run homer with two outs, but Brown was able to retire the side to pick up her first victory in a Hoggie uniform.
The second game did not go so well for the Javelinas as they committed four errors and gave up five unearned runs in the first inning. It would only get worse as the Dustdevils scored twice in the third and four times in the fourth to take an 11-1 lead.
The Javelina bats finally awakened in the bottom of the fifth as they plated three runs to stave off the run-rule loss for an inning. Brown smoked a two-run double in the frame.
The Dustdevils added another run in the sixth and Marina Vasquez held the Hogs scoreless in the bottom half of the inning to seal the visitors’ victory.
The Javelinas by Anderson on offense as she went 3-for-6 with a home run, triple and two runs scored. Brown added a pair of hits and three RBI’s while Melissa St. Clair picked up three hits, including a triple in the doubleheader. Dalia Marroquin (Brownsville/Clarendon) went 2-for-2 with a run scored in the second game. Bryan walked five times and scored twice in the two games after walking a grand total of nine times all of last year.
Brown picked up the win in the first game by pitching 7.0 innings and allowing eight hits, three runs and a walk while striking out two.
The Dustdevils rapped out 20 hits in the doubleheader. Beltran had two hits, a home run and three RBI’s in the first game.
In the second game, Vasquez was the leading hitter in addition to getting the win in the circle. She went 3-for-4 with two RBI’s and a run. Samantha Carrillo went 2-for-3 with three runs and a double while Clarissa Salinas went 2-for-3 with two RBI’s and a run. Vasquez allowed seven hits, four runs and two walks while striking out two to win the game.
The Javelinas are back in action on Thursday in San Antonio against Cameron at 5 o’clock.
