Hernandez, Nieto crowned LSC Field Athletes of the Week

Hernandez received the women’s honor, and Nieto the men’s

RICHARDSON, Texas- The Lone Star Conference released its weekly batch of track and field awards on Thursday, with junior Katryna Hernandez and sophomore Thomas Nieto each being named LSC Field Athlete of the Week following stellar performances at the 15th Annual Cactus Cup.

Hernandez receives the honor after climbing into 11th on the NCAA Division II shot put leader board using a 14.45m (47-5) toss at Pepsi Field at Javelina Stadium for a first-place finish among DI opponents.

Nieto, meanwhile, set a new meet record as the pair battled through poor weather conditions, with Nieto clearing 5.30m (17-4.5) to snap the record and claim the gold.

This marks Nieto's third honor of the outdoor season, the most of any student-athlete, while Hernandez last claimed the indoor iteration on January 24th.

The Javelinas will split up this weekend, with a squad heading to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to compete in the Alabama Crimson Tide Invitational, while a group will head to Houston, Texas, for the J Fred Duckett Twilight Invitational on the campus of Rice.
