Javelinas fall to Hilltoppers in 67-65 overtime loss

TAMUK falls just short of a last second win

AUSTIN, Texas – Texas A&M-Kingsville's women's basketball team fell in overtime on Sunday afternoon to St. Edward's by a final score of 67-65.

The Javelinas (6-6, 3-3 LSC) fell to the Hilltoppers (7-7, 3-3 LSC) as St. Ed's would steal the game late in overtime with a cutting layup converted by Sammie Dufek coming out of a timeout after Mia Rivers had done similarly for the Javs only two seconds earlier to tie the game.

"We didn't shoot it particularly well from beyond the three-point line," said head coach Michael Madrid when asked on his thoughts on the performance. "We settled for perimeter shots rather than attacking and getting to the rim."

On the game, TAMUK only shot 5-21 from beyond the arc and 25-57 from the field in the game.

Sophomore forward Veyda Lake led the Javelinas for the second straight game with a game-high 18 points on 8-10 shooting from the field. Rivers came one point short of a double-double posting 9 points and 12 rebounds in the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Overall, the game would be back and forth throughout with 8 lead changes the largest of which leads only amassed to six-points held by St. Ed's in the second quarter.

The nip and tuck nature of the game continued into the fourth quarter with both teams tied at 40-40. A Brianna Pena layup and then two later free throws saw TAMUK take a 55-50 lead with only 3:19 remaining in the final quarter.

The Hilltoppers would then go on a 7-0 capped off by a Ronnie Cantu going 1-2 from the line while shooting bonus free throws with less than a second remaining.

TAMUK would call a timeout, before Janessa Payne found a looping Shelby Ray in the paint who caught and released the ball in time for it to kiss off the glass and fall as time expired at 57-57.

In overtime, St. Ed's held a 65-63 advantage after a steal led to a fastbreak layup for the Hilltoppers with 17 seconds remaining. Rivers responded for TAMUK driving past her would be defender on her way to hitting a running layup down the right side of the paint tying the game at 65 with 3 seconds left.

The Hilltoppers would get the final word however, hitting a game winning layup with just over a second remaining with the final ending at 67-65.
