RICHARDSON, Texas – For the third time this season, redshirt sophomore Gilbert Garza was named the Lone Star Conference Special Teams Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office in a release on Monday.
 
Garza earns the honor again this season, after showing off his impressive leg once again last Saturday, nailing a 51-yard field goal at the end of the first half for the Javelinas after consecutive timeouts by Central Washington in an attempt to freeze him. Garza also knocked through a 22-yard field goal and two extra points for a total of 8 points on the night.
 
As mentioned, this is Garza's third time earning the honor and the fourth time in his career. Previously, he was recognized for his perfect performance against Eastern New Mexico where he posted 11 total points including two field goals, and for his 52-yard field goal and four extra points against West Texas A&M which helped lift the Javelinas' to a 31-24 victory.
 
The Weslaco native is the only player in the conference to be recognized three times as a player of the week so far this season.
