RICHARDSON, Texas (Track and Field) – The Lone Star Conference announced their annual LSC Scholar-Athlete Award winners on Monday afternoon that featured Texas A&M University-Kingsville's Bryce Martin and Kaina Martinez.Â
The LSC presents a Scholar-Athlete Award to one male and one female student-athlete at each member institution. Track and field had the most Scholar-Athletes with four and half of those four came from Texas A&M-Kingsville.
Bryce Martin concluded his collegiate career as an LSC Champion as he cleared 16' 1.75" (4.92 meters) in the pole vault at the LSC Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Earlier in the year, he placed 3rd in the same event at the LSC Indoor Track and Field Championships (14' 10"- 4.52 meters). Although an impressive athlete, Martin stood out head-and-shoulders in the classroom and is a four-time LSC All-Academic Team selection (three outdoor, one indoor), a U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic honoree (2015), a CoSIDA Academic Team selection (2017) and was tabbed as the 2016 Track and Field Academic Athlete of the Year.
In 2017, Kaina Martinez was crowned LSC Indoor Track and Field Champion in the 400-meter dash (56.16 seconds) as well as LSC Outdoor Track and Field Champion along with LaGae Brigance, Keandria Taylor and Plaserae Johnson in the women's 4x100-meter relay after running a time of 45.32 seconds. Other notable finishes this season consists of placing 3rd in the LSC Indoor Championships 200-meter dash (24.86 seconds), 3rd in the LSC Outdoor Championships long jump (19' 9.75"- 6.04 meters) and reached All-American status after finishing 2nd in the NCAA Outdoor Championships 100-meter dash (11.58 seconds) and 3rd in the 4x100-meter relay (45.01 seconds). The Belize native caps off an illustrious career with the Blue and Gold and is the school's record holder in the 200-meter dash (indoor- 23.72 seconds, outdoor- 23.33 seconds), 100-meter dash (outdoor- 11.46 seconds) and the 4x100-meter relay with Britteny Holcombe, Teandria Taylor, and Plaserae Johnson (outdoor- 44.51 seconds).
