Pelrean Rolls Up 224 Total Yards in 41-34 Loss to Tarleton

Junior Halfback Scores Twice From Long Range in Defeat

Box Score KINGSVILLE, Texas – Nick Pelrean reeled off 224 total yards and scored two touchdowns, but the Texas A&M-Kingsville football team (3-5, 2-4) fell to the Tarleton State Texans (5-3, 4-2), 41-34, on Saturday night at Javelina Stadium in Kingsville, Texas.

Pelrean's yardage total was the most by a Javelina since Greg Pitre accounted for 251 yards against Tarleton in 2015. Coach Daren Wilkinson's offense rolled up 410 yards of total offense, including 215 on the ground. Cade Dyal threw for 195 yards and two touchdowns.

DeVonte Williams returned an interception 68 yards for a score, the second defensive touchdown of the year for TAMUK. Tommy Chavez also snatched an INT.

FIRST QUARTER
On Kingsville's first drive, a Dyal fumble was recovered by Tarleton State at the TAMUK 43 and the Texans moved 43 yards in nine plays to the night's first touchdown. A 12-yard pass from Zed Woerner to Cornellius Carrington made the score 7-0. The Hogs responded 18 seconds later when Pelrean burst off the left side and raced down the sideline for a 68-yard touchdown. The Javelinas had a chance to take the lead later in the quarter, driving to the Tarleton 27, but an interception by Azizullah Fifita set up the visitors at their own 39.

SECOND QUARTER
Tarleton State took advantage of the turnover by moving 61 yards to a go-ahead TD. They were assisted by a 15-yard facemask penalty which negated a third down sack by the home team. Four plays later, Woerner threw his second TD pass, hitting Jacob Kaspar for a 12-yard score. Another Dyal interception on the Javs next series set up their opponents at the Kingsville 34. Sergio Sroka followed with a field goal to make the score 17-7.

The Hogs responded with a drive from their own 36 to the Tarleton 11. From there, Julio De La Garza booted a 28-yard field goal. Both teams headed to half with the Texans up by a touchdown.

THIRD QUARTER
The first score of the second half came courtesy of the Javelina defense, as Williams's interception and return tied the score, but a pair of Woerner touchdown tosses put Tarleton ahead by 14. Kingsville managed to close the gap to 11 with another field goal by De La Garza before the quarter ended.

FOURTH QUARTER
After stopping the Javelinas on a fourth down try at the TSU 41, the Texans added another Sroka field goal to move back in front by 14. The Hogs responded by marching 96 yards in six plays to a touchdown, with Pelrean taking a Dyal pass and scooting 37 yards to paydirt to make the score 34-27. Daniel McCants pushed Tarleton's lead back to two scores with a 24-yard scoring rush and Javelinas again sliced the deficit to seven, this time with Brown and Dyal connecting from 7 yards out with 2:38 to play. The ensuing onside kick was recovered by the visitors, however, and Tarleton ran out the clock to collect their fifth win.

The next contest for TAMUK takes them to Portales, N.M. to face Eastern New Mexico at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28th.
