CANYON, Texas (Football) – The first half was dominated by the Javelinas and Texas A&M University-Kingsville (3-3, 1-3 LSC) clinched its first Lone Star Conference victory since Nov. 12, 2012 with a 51-34 win at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium over West Texas A&M University (3-3, 2-2 LSC) Saturday evening.
 
Greg Pitre led all rushers with 130 yards on 21 carries and a touchdown – all in the first half. The success on the ground did not end there for the Hogs as Nick Pelrean finished with 109 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries and Luis Lopez added 41 yards on just five attempts. Myles Carr was 10-of-19 for 155 yards and two touchdowns and Ty Chisum tossed a 23-yard beauty for six points to Stehly Reden, who finished with two catches for 74 yards and a TD.
 
Defensively, the Javelinas topped its season-high with 14.0 tackles for a loss and 9.0 sacks and collected five pass breakups, three interceptions and two forced fumbles. ZeMarcus Green led all A&M-Kingsville defenders with seven tackles but the highlight reel that is Brandon Jones put up a historic stat line; six total tackles, 5.0 TFLs for 26 yards, 4.0 sacks for 22 yards and two quarterback hurries. Braedon Robinson added 2.0 sacks. Kuziah Ferebee blocked a punt in the opening quarter and later in the contest, took an interception to the house for a 70-yard score. Jarrod Sanders and DeMarcus Spurlock added interceptions.
 
The win snapped a six-game losing streak to West Texas A&M and in all probability, was the final time the Hogs and Buffs play at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium. WT is scheduled to build a new stadium on campus in time for the 2018 season.
 
First Quarter
After a three-and-out to begin the game, the Javelina special teams gave the offense great field position behind Ferebee's blocked punt that was recovered by Josh Bowman at the WT-26. Pitre rushed for 26 yards in the ensuing drive, capped off with a 13-yard TD rush at the 12:11 mark.
 
The defense stood tall as the Buffs offense took the field, as Ethan Brinkley was picked off by Spurlock and hurried by Green, setting up another great start to a Javelina offense drive. Following rushing attacked by Pelrean and Pitre, Carr connected with Jacob Armstrong for 27 yards and Armstrong's first career touchdown in a Javelina uniform, making it a 13-0 game in favor of A&M-Kingsville.
 
Kingsville continued to score, adding seven after being assisted by WT's pass interference call. The drive was extended and ended with Carr finding an open Anthony Autry for a 32-yard TD with 3:31 left to play. Julio De la Garza drained the PAT to give the Javs a 20-0 lead.
 
In the opening stanza, A&M-Kingsville went 5-of-6 on third down conversions.
 
Second Quarter
De la Garza hit his eighth field goal of 2016 with 9:09 remaining to end a 14-play, 61-yard drive that began the second quarter.
 
West Texas A&M scored for the first time in the game with 4:17 left in the first half. After an injury forced a quarterback change for the Buffaloes, Ben Arbuckle's first pass was intercepted for 18 yards by Sanders, giving the Javelinas a drive start from the home-23.
 
The offense made quick work on a trick play as Carr found an open Chisum behind the line of scrimmage, who then tossed a 23-yard floater to a wide-open Reden to give A&M-Kingsville a 30-7 cushion.
 
Third Quarter
The second half began the same way the first half went as the Javelina defense continued to shine on WT's homecoming. After marching down the field, Arbuckle was picked off by Ferebee, who returned the INT to the house (70 yards) at the 11:45 mark, extending the lead to 30.
 
Later in the frame, Carr found Reden for 51 yards to bring the Hogs inside the WT-10 and Pelrean rushed for seven and a score – his first of two on the evening – as Kingsville jumped out to a 44-7 lead with 6:44 remaining.
 
Arbuckle completed a 74-yard pass to running back Devon Paye as WT answered back with a TD of its own to make it a 44-14 ballgame with 6:01 left in the quarter.
 
Fourth Quarter
Backup quarterback Arbuckle seemed to settle down as the signal caller, scoring three big touchdowns to begin the fourth to cut the Buffs deficit to 10 with 3:39 remaining in the game.
 
The Kingsville defense all but assured itself of a win after stuffing West Texas' final attempt as a comeback victory and Pelrean put the stamp on the W with a 25-yard TD rush with 2:06 left in the contest to make it 51-34. That would be the final as A&M-Kingsville put a dramatic end to a 22-game conference losing streak.
 
Next up will be the Kleberg Bank Homecoming Game at Javelina Stadium Oct. 15 when the Javelinas host first year program University of Texas of the Permian Basin. The Falcons are 0-4 in Lone Star Conference play.
