KINGSVILLE, Texas (Women's Basketball) – Kaylin Roher drained a triple as the regulation buzzer went off to force overtime and
Joslyn Smith sunk a free throw with .1 seconds remaining in overtime No. 1 as Texas A&M University-Kingsville (5-1) defeated future Lone Star Conference member, University of Texas of the Permian Basin (2-4), 56-55, on Friday afternoon inside the Gil H. Steinke Physical Education Center-Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.
Leading by as much as 15, the Javelinas were able to salvage the victory behind 23 offensive rebounds that led to 16 second chance points.
Lily Hospers finished with seven offensive boards and 14 total rebounds. The balanced attack was led by
TaSheena Moore's 12 points and five assists. Roher finished with nine points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Forcing overtime with the three-pointer by Roher, the second chances continued to pile up with four offensive rebounds and six points coming in the extra five minutes of play.
With the victory, the Javelinas are now 5-1 in 2015-16 and 4-1 against South Central Regional opponents.
Jamesha Wade finished with eight points, eight rebounds and two steals, Smith added six rebounds and
Ope Ibrahim swatted away three shots.
The Javelinas ended the first quarter with a 17-7 lead after scoring eight points off UTPB turnovers. The Hogs continued to hold the Falcons scoreless and jumped out to a 13-0 run midway in the second period to lead 22-7 before the Falcons scored their first bucket of the period (5:28 remaining). They went scoreless from the 3:13 mark in the first period to the 5:28 marker in the first half.
At halftime, the Javelinas led 25-13 and held the Falcons to 17.9 percent shooting from the floor. As a unit, the Hogs recorded 28 rebounds, nine on the offensive glass, and four blocks, three by Ibrahim. Moore led all scorers with seven points on 3-of-4 shooting and the guard dished out two assists. Hospers pulled down six rebounds and
Ashley Viera added five points off the bench. Roher filled up the stat sheet with three points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal.
Texas-Permian Basin was able to outscore the Javelinas 11-6 in the third period to head into the fourth trailing 31-24.
A 5-0 run by UTPB made it a one possession ballgame but a Hospers layup with 8:25 left to play gave TAMUK a four-point cushion. UTPB looked to take its first lead since the first period on a three-point attempt with 6:38 remaining but the ball rimmed out, giving the Javelinas a fresh shot clock with a one-point lead.
A beautiful feed from Moore to Hospers extended Kingsville's lead to three with 5:28 left but UTPB returned the favor on the other end to cut its deficit to one. On the ensuing possession, Roher connected on her second triple of the game, but again, the Falcons were able to answer with a three-point play of its own with 4:49 remaining.
Another and-one for the Falcons gave Permian Basin a 39-38 lead with 3:37 left.
Kaylee Kana connected on a jumper with 3:15 remaining as TAMUK regained the lead, 40-39. On the defensive end, Kana took a charge with 2:23 remaining to give the Javelinas possession with a one-point lead. Hospers pulled down a crucial offensive rebound at the 2:00 mark to and the Javelinas took advantage of the second chance opportunity on Wade's mid-range jumper to extend the lead to three with 1:49 left to play.
Texas-Permian Basin forced a turnover with 1:02 left to get the ball trailing 42-41 and the Javelina defense stood tall to preserve its lead. Hospers continued her career day in her brief Javelina career with yet another offensive board, her sixth of the game and 13 overall rebound, forcing UTPB to foul Texas A&M-Kingsville with 10 ticks remaining. The latter of two free throws found the net to give TAMUK a two-point lead. A timeout by the Falcons allowed them to advance to their side of the court and a corner three went found the bottom of the nylon to give Permian Basin a one-point lead. A called timeout with no timeouts remaining gave UTPB two free throws and both were drained to make it a three-point game with 2.7 seconds remaining.
The Javelinas inbounded the ball and Roher drained a triple with the clock dwindling down to zero to force overtime.
With 3:46 remaining in overtime, Hospers pulled down another offensive board that led to a three-pointer by Moore to give Kingsville a 49-46 lead. The second chance buckets continued to fall for the Hogs with Moore's bucket with 2:33 remaining. The Falcons took a two-point lead with 2:16 remaining, but Wade sunk both free throws to knot it up at 53 with 2:02 remaining. On the other end, Wade swiped a pass that led to a Smith layup to give TAMUK a two-point lead with 1:30 remaining and Smith swiped a pass with 1:10 left to force a UTPB turnover.
The Falcons tied the game at 55 with 27 seconds left to give the Javelinas the opportunity to win the game in overtime. With .1 remaining, Smith headed to the line and sunk the first to clinch the 56-55 victory for the Javelinas.
For UTPB, three players reached double figures with Khadijah Vigil leading all scorers with 15 points and the forward added nine rebounds. Elisa Gonzalez finished with 14 points, eight rebounds, four assists and a block.
The Javelinas head to Odessa to take on UTPB on Monday, Nov. 30.
