Pete Peterson is quietly putting together an outstanding coaching resume with the Javelinas. He has directed his program to six straight winning seasons which is a school record. He has posted a 186-147 record in 12 seasons and is set to become the first coach in school history with at least 200 career wins this year.

Following the 2008-09 season in which he led the Javelinas to the NCAA Tournament, he was named the Small College Coach of the Year by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches. This is the third time he has earned a Coach of the Year honor joining his two previous Lone Star Conference South Division awards that he won in 2003-04 and 2005-06, respectively. He has also led the Hoggies to two NCAA Division II Tournament appearances.

He has posted eight winning seasons as head coach of the Javelinas, the most in school history. Coach Peterson won his 150th game at A&M-Kingsville with an 85-61 homecourt win over Angelo State on February 21, 2007. Peterson has coached the Javelinas to one of their winningest stretches in school history over the past six years.

The Javelinas went 19-11 in 2008-09 and over the past six years have posted a record of 108-65. The team has won at least 16 games each of those seasons.

The 2008-09 team was led by record-setting point guard Wendell Mulkey and a defense that set a school record for blocked shots. Chip Jones was named the Lone Star Conference South Defensive Player of the Year. The team was 17-7 in games decided by 10 points or less.

The 2007-08 squad featured five players averaging between 9.0 and 11.5 points per game while Mulkey was named the Lone Star Conference South Division Defensive Player of the Year.

In 2005-06 Peterson led his club to an 18-10 record and shared the LSC Coach of the Year award. It was the second time he won the award. Peterson also earned the award after leading the Javelinas 19-11 mark and a trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2003-04. On December 12, 2004, Peterson won his 100th game as a head coach as his Javelinas defeating Southeastern Oklahoma State 62-52.

The 2004-05 squad was one of the most balanced for Peterson. The Javelinas posted a 17-11 mark as four players averaged in double figures and three different players earning LSC South Player of the Week honors. Hamilton and Richard Gonzalez earned All-LSC honors, while Gonzalez was named Defensive Player of the Year.

After a tough 12-15 mark in 2002-03, Peterson bounced back, leading the Javelinas to a 19-11 mark and a trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2003-04. The Javelinas had several memorable moments that season, beating #25 Southwestern Oklahoma 74-59 in San Antonio and taking second ranked Tarleton State to the wire twice, falling 89-85 in the LSC Tournament semifinals and 77-74 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

In Peterson’s third year, 1999-2000, the Javelinas posted a 15-12 overall mark including an 8-6-conference record, the first winning season since for the program since 1995-96. The following season the Javelinas advanced to the semifinals of the LSC Tournament, again, the first time the program had achieved that since the 1995-96 season. Peterson’s squad followed up with a second consecutive trip to the LSC semifinals in 2002.

Peterson’s squads have always been known for sound fundamentals and hard-nosed defense. The Javelinas finished third in the LSC in scoring defense in 2006-07 and fourth in 2005-06, 2007-08 and 2008-09. The Javelinas have allowed less than 70 points in a game in each of the last three seasons.

Peterson has reached double figures in wins in all 12 of his seasons at A&M-Kingsville, making him the only coach in school history to accomplish this feat. The current streak of six consecutive winnings seasons is the longest streak in school history breaking the mark set from 1988 through 1993.

Six different players have earned Lone Star Conference Freshman of the Year honors since Peterson took over. Eric Potter won the award in Peterson’s second season in 1998-99, Jerome Lewis in 1999-2000, Richard Gonzalez in 2001-02, Colin Merritt in 2002-03, Wayne Lovings in 2003-04 and Juan Lanauze in 2004-05.

Twice Peterson has coached players to LSC South Division Player of the Year honors. Remi Yusuf won the award in 2006 and Will Brown took home the award in 2004. He has also coached three players that have earned honorable mention All-America honors, Yusuf in 2006, Will Brown in 2004 and Robert Hamilton in 2005.

Peterson came to Texas A&M-Kingsville in 1997 after coaching for 11 years at the University of the Incarnate Word. The Crusaders had a 224-111 record during his tenure on the staff and reached the NAIA National Tournament four times and won three Heart of Texas Conference championships.

Prior to working at UIW, Peterson was the Assistant at Concordia University in Austin, Texas, for two seasons. Concordia advanced to the NAIA State Championship game his second year. He has also been on the staffs at Winfield High School in Kansas and Alta High School in Utah.

Peterson is a native of Denver and played at Jefferson High School where he was named Most Valuable Player his senior season. The squad had an 82-17 record during his four years and won the conference title twice with Peterson on the roster. He was on the St. John’s Junior College team that finished first and second in conference play during his two years and he was named to the all-conference unit. The team had a 38-19 record in his two seasons. At Southwestern (Kan.), he was named All-District and All-Conference as the team twice captured conference championships. He served as the team’s captain and was named the Most Valuable Player. The team posted a 32-21 record in his two years.

Peterson served as head tennis coach at Incarnate Word where he took his team to the NAIA National Tournament, a first for the program and the university.

Peterson holds an associate arts degree from St. John’s Junior College in Kansas, a bachelor of science degree from Southwestern (Kan.) College and a master of arts degree from the University of the Incarnate Word.

Peterson is married and he and his wife, the former Annette Burton, have two daughters, Hannah and Leah.
