 Both the men’s and women’s cross country teams showed nice improvement under second year head coach Ryan Dall, but both teams still have a ways to go to be Lone Star Conference contenders. The men’s team was led all season long by sophomore Kiya Dandena and senior Daniel Castro. Dandena won both the Texas A&M-International and Incarnate Word Invitationals during the season and finished second at the UT-San Antonio Ricardo Romo Fiesta Texas Classic. Castro had four top 15 finishes during the regular season. The men opened the season with a dual meet victory over Texas A&M-International as Dandena and Castro finished 1-2 and Margarito Corona took 4th. They followed it up with a second place finish at UTSA as they put four runners in the top 25. The men grabbed seventh place honors at the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islander Splash and then took third place at the regular season finale race at Incarnate Word. At the Lone Star Conference Championships at West Texas A&M Dandena narrowly missed all-conference honors when he came in 15th place. The team finished in ninth place. Two weeks later Dandena competed at the NCAA South Central Region Championship hosted by Abilene Christian and came in 24th in the 10K race.  The women’s team featured a powerful 1-2 punch in senior Erica Alvarado and sophomore Jessica Martinez, but did not have much depth. Alvarado was superb all season long winning at the Texas A&M-International Invitational and grabbed top three finishes at the UTSA and Texas Lutheran meets. She had a season best time of 18:10.5 at the 5K distance. Martinez showed great improvement over her freshman season. She had two top five finishes during the year and broke 20 minutes in the 5K at the Islander Splash meet. The women won the A&M-International dual meet and grabbed fifth place finishes at the UTSA and Incarnate Word meets. The women finished in 10th place at the LSC Championships. Alvarado took home silver medal honors after clocking a 23:36.9 over the 6K course. It was the highest finish ever by a Javelina woman at the LSC Championships. Martinez broke through the top 20 with a 17th place finish. Both Alvarado and Martinez competed at the NCAA South Central Region meet and ran their best times of the season for a 6K. Alvarado took 34th in a time of 23:15.63 while Martinez finished 68th in a time of 24:10.30.
