The 2009-10 campaign for the Texas A&M-Kingsville men’s basketball team was a tale of two seasons directly corresponding to the calendar flipping from 2009 to 2010. In 2009, the Javelinas went 10-2 and held opponents under 70 points in 75 percent of games. In 2010, the Hoggies went 3-12 and allowed at least 70 points in two-thirds of games.
Coming off a 2008-09 season the saw the team advance to the NCAA Division II Tournament, the Javelinas got off to a great start to the 2009-10 season. A 15-0 second half run powered the team to a season opening victory at Texas A&M-International. Then the team picked up victories over Texas Lutheran and St. Mary’s before dropping their first game of the year at Incarnate Word.
The Javelinas got back on track quickly after the one point loss at Incarnate Word reeling off three straight victories over Texas A&M-Commerce, St. Mary’s and Texas A&M-International. After a loss on the road at Northeastern State, the team bounced back with a two-point win at home against Incarnate Word.
Junior point guard Antwan Mullins had a great start to the season for the team as he was named the LSC South Defensive Player of the Week and Offensive Player of the Week in consecutive weeks in December.
As December worn on, Mullins and the Javelinas continued to pick up victories as they dispatched Southeastern Oklahoma, East Central and Huston-Tillotson heading into the New Year.
Unfortunately, 2010 was not a good year for the Javelinas. They began January with five straight losses before knocking off Angelo State in one of the few high points of the semester. They won a thrilling 97-91 game against the Rams in front of a season best crowd of 3,100. It was senior Flavio Milam leading the way with a career high 29 points, five rebounds, two blocks and two steals en route to being named the LSC South Offensive Player of the Week.
The big win over Angelo State did not propel the team to bigger and better things. They lost six of the next seven games heading into their final home game of the season against West Texas A&M.
The Buffs jumped out to a 26-16 lead in the first half, but the Javelinas closed the half on a 20-6 run. The second half went back and forth and it was the Buffs who had a chance to win the game in the final moments, but they missed a shot with five seconds left. The Hoggies got the rebound and passed the ball up the court quickly and it was Mullins dropping in a lay-up at the buzzer to win the game.
The Javelinas finished the season 13-14, their first losing season since 2002-3. Head coach Pete Peterson came up just short in his bid to earn his 200th career win and will enter the 2010-11 season with a 199-161 record. Despite the losing record this year, the Javelinas finished the decade with their highest number of wins (160) and highest winning percentage (56.9%) of any decade in school history.
The Javelinas ended the season averaging 66.8 points per game while shooting 40.3 percent from the field, 28.7 percent from three-point range and 70.8 percent from the foul line. Milam led the team with 12.2 points and 6.0 rebounds per game while Mullins averaged 11.7 points and led the team with 92 assists and 57 steals. They finished sixth in the LSC South Division.
